The Australian Government delivers even more choice for Australian women

On 16th March 2025, the Australian Government increased the range of pharmaceuticals listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to offer more choice for lower cost. The focus was on contraception, Endometriosis and IVF medicines.

This is in addition to the announcement in February 2025 when $573.3 million was committed to women’s health in Australia, to deliver “more choice, lower costs and better health care for women”.

The listed treatments:

Contraceptive

Slinda® (Drospirenone)has been listed as new contraceptive option and is a progestogen-only-pill that may be used by over 100,000 women who don’t respond well to contraceptives with estrogens.

Endometriosis 

Over 8,500 women will now have access to a new endometriosis treatment medicine. Ryeqo® (Relugolix with estradiol and with norethisterone) is a medicine option for those who don’t have success with relief of symptoms with the use of hormonal treatment or pain relief.

IVF

Now, four combination therapy Pergoveris® (follitropin alfa with lutropin alfa) pens per script will be available under one patient co-payment (increased from 2) for over 6,000 women annually who require up to four pens to complete an IVF cycle. It will also now be available in the earlier phase of IVF treatment.
